Electric Circuit Racer Battery-powered
700bhp for a dozen laps

If you think the Tesla is as exciting as electric cars get, check out the Quimera.

he brainchild of Spanish entrepreneur Javier de Rocafort, it is a pure racing car at the moment, with a carbonfibre monocoque and body panels, but it has 700bhp, 811lb ft of torque and a 175mph top speed.

Three electric motors are powered by 612kg of lithium-polymer batteries (the whole car weighs 1550kg) and the idea is that it will be able to run in races of 9 to 12 laps. In qualifying trim it can hit 0-60mph in just 2.5 sec. The car is intended as a testbed for electric power technologies. To make driving it a more engaging experience, the Quimera also has a six-speed gearbox, which has been developed with Hewland.
